John S. McGroarty
John Steven McGroarty (born August 20, 1862 in Luzerne County , Pennsylvania , † August 7, 1944 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician . Between 1935 and 1939 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John McGroarty attended his home public schools and the Harry Hillman Academy in Wilkes-Barre . From 1890 to 1893 he was a chamberlain in Lucerne County. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1894, he began to work in this profession in Wilkes-Barre. Soon after, he moved to Montana , where he worked for the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. between 1896 and 1901 . In 1901 he settled in Los Angeles and found employment as a journalist. As a writer, he wrote several books and dramas. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .
In the 1934 congressional election , McGroarty was elected to the Eleventh Constituency of California in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded William E. Evans on January 3, 1935 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until January 3, 1939 . During this time, further New Deal laws were passed by the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt .
In 1938 he renounced another candidacy. Instead, he unsuccessfully sought his party's nomination for the office of Secretary of State of California. After his time in the US House of Representatives, McGroarty returned to working as a journalist. He died in Los Angeles on August 7, 1944.
