Jamie "Jimmy" Gomez (born November 25, 1974 in Fullerton , California ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . Gomez will represent the state of California in the United States House of Representatives from June 2017 .

Life

Jimmy Gomez, born the youngest of six children to Mexican immigrants, grew up in a typical working-class family. His father made a living for the family as a cook. After attending high school , Gomez also began doing odd jobs, first as a conductor on the subway, and later as an employee in a Target Corporation store .

With the money saved in this way, Gomez enrolled at the University of California, Los Angeles , from which he graduated magna cum laude in political science in 1996 . He then went to Harvard , where he earned a degree in public relations .

Gomez began his political career in the 1990s as a staff member of a Los Angeles City Council councilor . He first came into contact with Congress in the early 2000s, as an employee of the then Congresswoman Hilda Solis .

In 2012, Gomez entered the California State Assembly as a Democratic Party MP , and was re-elected twice as a result. In 2017, Xavier Becerra left the US House of Representatives to serve as Attorney General of California. Gomez then announced that he was running for the now vacant seat. In June 2017 he was elected with almost 60 percentage points of the vote.

Jimmy Gomez is married.
