George Paul Miller (born January 15, 1891 in San Francisco , California , †  December 29, 1982 in Alameda , California) was an American politician . Between 1945 and 1973 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

George Miller attended both public and private schools. In 1912 he graduated from Saint Mary's College of California . From 1912 to 1917 he worked as a civil engineer. During the First World War he served from 1917 to 1919 as a lieutenant in the field artillery of the US Army . From 1921 to 1925 he served on the staff of the Veterans' Bureau . Otherwise he worked again as a civil engineer. He was also a co-owner of a travel agency in San Francisco. At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . From 1937 to 1941 he was a member of the California State Assembly . He then served as Secretary of State at the California Department of Fisheries and Forestry from 1942 to 1944.

In the 1944 congressional election , Miller was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of California , where he succeeded Albert E. Carter on January 3, 1945 . After 13 re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 14 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1973 . Since 1953 he represented there as the successor to Jack Z. Anderson the eighth district of his state. His time in Congress saw the end of World War II , the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War , the Vietnam War and, domestically, the civil rights movement . From 1961 to 1973 Miller was chairman of the Science and Space Committee. During this time, the first manned moon landing took place in 1969 .

In 1972, George Miller was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he withdrew from politics. He died on December 29, 1982 in Alameda, where he had spent his old age.

The Miller Bluffs cliffs in Antarctica are named after him.
