Charles Michael "Mike" Thompson (born January 24, 1951 in St. Helena , California ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . As a member of the US House of Representatives , he represented the first congressional constituency of the state of California between 1999 and 2013 . Since 2013 he has represented the fifth constituency of his state there. Before that, he was a member of the California Senate in 1982 and 1983 . Re-elected in 2016, he will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States , which will meet on January 3, 2017 . His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.

Political opinions

Unusually for a Catholic, Thompson is one of the “pro-choice” politicians, ie he advocates liberal abortion legislation. Together with 47 other Catholic Congressmen, he signed a letter to Cardinal Theodore McCarrick in Washington DC, with which he was to be dissuaded from withholding the sacraments from Catholic representatives because of their voting behavior.

Thompson is also a member of the moderately conservative Blue Dog Coalition .
