Urs Altermatt (born July 18, 1942 in Biberist ) is a Swiss historian . From 1980 to 2010 he was a full professor for contemporary history at the University of Freiburg . From 2003 to 2007 he was the rector of this bilingual university .

Life and research

Altermatt comes from a family close to the Christian Democratic People's Party. He studied history, sociology and political science in Bern , Freiburg and Berlin , he completed in 1970 with the promotion of Dr. phil. at the University of Bern . From 1973 to 1980 he was a lecturer at the University of Bern and has since been a professor in Freiburg. Guest lectureships and research stays have taken him to Harvard , Vienna , Budapest , Cracow , Sarajevo , Sofia and Leuven .

Altermatt's research focuses on the political system in Switzerland , culture , religion and society as well as minorities , nationalism , anti-Semitism and right-wing extremism .

In 2002 it was published under the title “Nation and Nationalism in Europe. Cultural construction of identities »a commemorative publication on his 60th birthday with contributions by Emil Brix , Erhard Busek , Moritz Csáky , Georg Kreis , Adam Michnik and others. Further commemorative publications were published in 2010 on retirement and in 2017 on his 75th birthday.

In 1991, Altermatt published the standard work “The Swiss Federal Councils”, which appeared in a new version in 2019. He commented on the Federal Council elections for Swiss television .

From 1990 to 2000 he worked for the Swiss cultural foundation Pro Helvetia . He was a member of the Commission for Contemporary History and the International Cultural Center . Altermatt was appointed by the Swiss government as President of the Jubilee Commission for the 700th anniversary of the Swiss Confederation. He was on the advisory board of the Munich journal Historisches Jahrbuch , the Österreichische Osthefte and the magazine for contemporary church history . He was editor-in-chief of the journal for Swiss church history . In 1995 he co-authored the right-wing extremism report for the Swiss government.

Altermatt has been a member of the Swiss Student Union since 1961 and is a member of the GV Wikinger Immensee , AV Berchtoldia Bern and honorary philistine of the AV Fryburgia and AKV Neu-Romania Freiburg . In 1968 he headed the association as Central President.

He lives with his wife in Solothurn , the couple has three grown children.
