Emil Brix (born December 16, 1956 in Vienna ) is an Austrian diplomat , cultural politician and historian .

Life

Emil Brix studied English and history at the University of Vienna . Since 1982 he has been working in the diplomatic service of the Republic of Austria . From 1984 to 1986 he was club secretary in the ÖVP parliamentary club, from 1986 to 1989 in the ministerial office of the Federal Minister for Science and Research Hans Tuppy .

From 1990 to 1995 he was Consul General in Cracow and from 1995 to 1999 Director of the Austrian Cultural Institute in London . Until the beginning of 2010 he was head of the cultural policy section in the Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs . From April 2010 to January 2015 Emil Brix was Austrian Ambassador in London . On January 19, 2015, Emil Brix took up his post as Ambassador of the Republic of Austria in Moscow .

Emil Brix is ​​Deputy Chairman of the Institute for the Danube Region and Central Europe .

In June 2017 he was appointed director of the Diplomatic Academy Vienna from August 2017.

Awards

On January 26th, 2009 Emil Brix was awarded the Gloria Artis Medal for Cultural Merit by the Polish Minister for Culture and National Heritage, Bogdan Zdrojewski , in the gallery of the International Cultural Center in Krakow . The medal is the highest Polish distinction given to outstanding personalities who have made a contribution to Polish culture in the artistic field or for the preservation of cultural heritage. He is an external member of the Polish Academy of Learning in Cracow .
