Johannes Eigner (* 1960 in Bad St. Leonhard im Lavanttal , Carinthia) is an Austrian diplomat . From 2012 to 2017 he was ambassador to Belgrade , Serbia . He has been the Austrian ambassador to Russia since 2017 .

Eigner graduated from grammar school and studied law and interpreting and translating in French and Russian in Graz , and a post-graduate degree in international law and private international law at the University of Strasbourg .

In 1985 he entered the diplomatic service. In 1987 he was a trainee at the Austrian embassy in Cairo and was employed at the embassy in Moscow from 1987 to 1995 , first as a press attaché and from 1992 deputy head of mission . In 1995 he became Deputy Head of the OSCE Department in the Foreign Ministry and the Permanent Mission of Austria to the OSCE in Vienna. In 1999 he moved to the Embassy in Bratislava as deputy head of mission . In 2004 he became head of the department for EU enlargement, ENP, EU and economic relations with the countries of Eastern and Southeastern Europe in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vienna, and in 2008 also deputy head of the section for integration and economic policy matters .

On October 23, 2012, Eigner was appointed Austrian ambassador to Serbia . In 2017 he succeeded Emil Brix as the Austrian ambassador to Russia .
