The Austrian Embassy in Russia is the diplomatic representation of Austria in the Russian Federation in the Russian capital Moscow .

location

The embassy is located in the Central Administrative District in the Khamovniki district of Moscow at the intersection of Starokonjuschenny Street and Pretschistensky Street . The address of the embassy is Starokonjuschenny Gasse 1/6 .

history

The embassy is located in the Mindowski mansion building. This building, which is equipped with a rotunda with a massive row of columns, was built as a project by Nikita Lazarev in the style of neoclassicism . It was completed in 1906 and then became the property of the businessman Nikolai Mindowski.

After the October Revolution it was expropriated and initially used as a residents' registration office. The Austrian embassy has been located here since 1927. After the annexation of Austria it belonged to the German embassy and was used as a guest house. From 23 to 24 August 1939 Joachim von Ribbentrop stayed here on the occasion of the signing of the non-aggression pact . After diplomatic relations were broken off due to the German-Soviet war , the building continued to be used as a guest house by the USSR . Winston Churchill was a guest at the Moscow Conference in October 1944 .

After the Austrian State Treaty in 1955 , the building was returned to the Austrian Embassy by the Foreign Ministry of the USSR. This is also where the ambassador's residence is located and cultural events take place. A consular section and visa section are not far from the embassy (Große Lyowschinski-Gasse 7).

The Austrian ambassador since 2017 is Johannes Eigner .
