In 1965 he received his doctorate with the dissertation on The Image of Man with Albert Camus: A Myth from Man to Dr. phil. In 1966/67 he completed post-graduate studies at the Sorbonne in Paris . In Paris he was Gabriel Marcel's secretary. From 1968 he was a university assistant at the Philosophical Institute of the University of Vienna. In 1970/71 he was visiting professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks .

In 1974 he completed his habilitation with a thesis on The Question of the Other: a study of social ontology by Jean Paul Sartre and Gabriel Marcel . In 1977 he was appointed professor of philosophy at the Philosophical Institute of the University of Vienna. In 1980 he was visiting professor at the Philosophical Institute Beyazit of Istanbul University .

From 1987 to 1991 and from 2001 to 2004 he was director of the Philosophical Institute at the University of Vienna and from 2004 to 2008 Dean of the Faculty for Philosophy and Educational Science at the University of Vienna. Kampits has been a member of the bioethics commission at the Federal Chancellery since 2007 and has been its deputy chairman since 2009. From 2012 to 2016, Kampits was professor for ethics in medicine and head of the center for ethics in medicine at Danube University Krems . He is also a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Upper Austrian think tank Academia Superior .

His students included the physician Karl Hermann Spitzy and the later EU Commissioner Johannes Hahn . The latter wrote the dissertation in 1987 on the topic The Perspectives of Philosophy Today: Depicted on the Phenomenon of the City near Kampits. Plagiarism allegations were raised and investigated against this work from 2007 to 2011. The rector of the University of Vienna said that such a dissertation would no longer be accepted today.

Kampits accuses politicians of not having the wellbeing of people in mind when protecting non-smokers, but of wanting to patronize. The argument that non-smokers want to protect against dangerous smoke inhalation is untenable. Because according to Kampits there is no danger of passive smoking, it is a "statistical construct". Similar to "grotesque" regulations on the degree of curvature of cucumbers, the EU wants to ban smoking. However, Kampits overlooks the fact that the degree of curvature of cucumbers in Austria had been regulated by law since 1967.

Kampits is married and has a daughter.
