Scott H. Peters (born June 17, 1958 in Springfield , Ohio ) is an American politician . He has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives since 2013 .

Career

Scott Peters was born in Ohio and raised in Michigan . He later studied at Duke University in Durham ( North Carolina ) until 1980 . In 1980 and 1981 he worked for the Environmental Protection Agency . After a subsequent law degree at New York University and his admission to the bar in 1984, he began practicing this profession in California. One of his specialties is environmental law. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1991 and 1996 he served as the assistant prosecutor for the city of San Diego . From 2000 to 2008 he was a member of the local city council, which he has chaired since 2006. From 2009 to 2012 he was Commissioner for the San Diego Port Area.

In the 2012 congressional election , Peters was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 52nd  constituency of California , where he succeeded Duncan D. Hunter , who moved to the 50th district, on January 3, 2013 . In the election, he won 51 percent of the vote compared to 49 percent that fell on his Republican rival Brian Bilbray , who had previously represented the 50th district in Congress . In the House of Representatives, Peters was a member of the Armed Forces Committee and the Science, Space and Technology Committee between 2013 and 2015 . After three re-elections in 2014, 2016 and 2018, he can still hold office today. His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2021 with the option of a further candidacy in 2020. He has been a member of the Armed Forces Committee again since 2015. In addition, he is or was a member of the Legal Committee and a total of four sub-committees.

He is married and has two children.
