Richard William Pombo (born January 8, 1961 in Tracy , California ) is an American politician . Between 1993 and 2007 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Richard Pombo attended California State Polytechnic University in Pomona between 1979 and 1982 . After that he worked as a farmer and rancher. He was also a founding member of the San Joaquin County Citizens Land Alliance . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He served on the Tracy Parish Council in 1991 and 1992.

In the 1992 congressional elections , Pombo was elected to the 11th constituency of California in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Tom Lantos on January 3, 1993 . After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2007 . During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Pombo was considered a Conservative MP. Among other things, he supported the Iraq war. Between 2003 and 2007 he was Chairman of the House Resources Committee .

In 2010 he ran unsuccessfully in the Republican primary for the congressional election.
