Diane Edith Watson (born November 12, 1933 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American politician . Between 2001 and 2011 she represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Diane Watson studied at the University of California in Los Angeles until 1956 . After that she was an elementary school teacher and school psychologist in this city. She also graduated from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and Claremont Graduate University . From 1969 to 1971 she was a faculty member at California State University in Los Angeles. From 1971 to 1973 she worked for the California State Department of Education; between 1975 and 1978 she was a member of the school board of the City of Los Angeles. At the same time she embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1978 and 1998 she was a member of the California Senate . She was US Ambassador to Micronesia in 1999 and 2000 .

After the death of MP Julian C. Dixon , Diane Watson was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election due for the 32nd seat of California , where she took up her new mandate on June 5, 2001. Since 2003 she has represented the 33rd  constituency of her state there. The terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan took place during her time as MPs . Watson was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, as well as six sub-committees. In 2010 she decided not to run again. She was succeeded by Karen Bass .
