Jeffery Cohelan (born June 24, 1914 in San Francisco , California , †  February 15, 1999 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1959 and 1971 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jeffery Cohelan attended his home public schools and San Mateo Junior College . He then studied at the University of California's School of Economics . From 1942 until his election to Congress, he was Treasurer of the Milk Producers and Milk Exporters Union in Alameda Counties and Contra Costa Counties. From 1949 to 1953 he was a member of the Berkeley Welfare Commission. He also served as a speaker for the Institute of Industrial Relations at the University of California. In 1953 and 1954 he studied in England , including at the University of Oxford . Cohelan was also a member of the San Francisco Municipal Commission on Foreign Relations.

Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . From 1955 to 1958 he was on the Berkeley City Council . In the 1958 congressional elections , Cohelan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the seventh constituency of California, where he succeeded John Joseph Allen on January 3, 1959 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1971 . During this time, among other things, the beginning of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement fell . In 1970 Cohelan was no longer nominated for re-election by his party.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, he was executive director of the Group Health Association of America . After that he did not hold any further public offices. He died on February 15, 1999 in the federal capital Washington.
