John M. Coghlan

John Maxwell Coghlan (born December 8, 1835 in Louisville , Kentucky , †  March 26, 1879 in Oakland , California ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1847, John Coghlan moved to Illinois with his parents . Two years later, the family moved to California during the gold rush , where they settled in Suisun City . He attended the public schools in his respective homeland. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Suisun City in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He was a member of the California State Assembly in 1865 and 1866 .

In the congressional elections of 1870 Coghlan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third electoral district of California , where he succeeded James Augustus Johnson on March 4, 1871 . Since he was not confirmed in 1872, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1873 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Coghlan practiced as a lawyer again. Between 1876 and 1878 he was a federal attorney for the northern district of California. He died on March 26, 1879 in Oakland, where he was also buried.
