H. Allen Smith (born October 8, 1909 in Dixon , Illinois , †  June 4, 1998 in Glendale , California ) was an American politician . Between 1957 and 1973 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Allen Smith attended Hollywood High School in Los Angeles and then studied at the University of California there . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Southern California and his admission to the bar in 1934, he began to work in this profession. From 1935 to 1942 he also worked for the FBI . He later embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1948 and 1956 he was a member of the California State Assembly . In 1960, 1964 and 1968 he took part as a delegate at the respective Republican National Conventions .

In the 1956 congressional election , Smith was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 20th  constituency of California , where he succeeded John Carl Hinshaw on January 3, 1957 . After seven re-elections, he was able to complete eight legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1973 . During this time, among other things, the final phase of the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War fell . In 1972 Smith declined to run again. As a result, he no longer appeared politically. He died in Glendale on June 4, 1998.
