Walter Rayford Tucker III (born May 28, 1957 in Compton , California ) is an American politician . Between 1993 and 1995 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Walter Tucker comes from a well-known local political family. His father was a former mayor of Compton. Between 1974 and 1976 he studied at Princeton University and then until 1978 at the University of Southern California . After studying law at Georgetown University and being admitted to the bar in 1984, he began to work in this profession in Compton. From 1984 to 1986, he was also the assistant district attorney in Los Angeles County . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was mayor of his hometown Compton in 1991 and 1992. He was also active as an ordained minister in the church field.

In the 1992 congressional elections , Tucker was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 37th  constituency of California , where he succeeded Al McCandless on January 3, 1993 . After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his resignation in December 1995 . There he was a member of the Committee on Public Works and the Small Business Committee . In 1995, allegations of corruption were raised against him from his time as Mayor of Compton. In this context he resigned from his seat on December 15, 1995. In 1996 he was sentenced to 27 months in prison.

Today Walter Tucker is pastor in a church near Chicago . He has two children with his wife.
