Hubert Baxter Scudder (born November 5, 1888 in Sebastopol , California , † July 4, 1968 there ) was an American politician . Between 1949 and 1959 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Hubert Scudder attended the public schools in his home country. He also attended evening schools and correspondence courses. He also studied law. Between 1912 and 1920 Scudder managed the public utilities in Sebastopol. That period was interrupted between May and December 1918 when he was serving in the Coast Guard during World War I. From 1920 Scudder worked in the insurance and real estate business. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1924 he was a city councilor and in 1926 mayor of Sebastopol. Between 1925 and 1940 he was a member of the California State Assembly . He then acted from 1943 to 1948 as State Commissioner for Real Estate Business ( Real Estate Commissioner ). In 1947 and 1948 he was President of the National Association of Licensed Lawyers.

In the 1948 congressional elections , Scudder was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the first constituency of California , where he succeeded Clarence F. Lea on January 3, 1949 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1959 . These were shaped by the events of the Cold War and the Korean War and the civil rights movement . In 1958 Hubert Scudder renounced another candidacy. In the following years he worked again in the insurance industry and as a real estate dealer. He died on July 4, 1968 in Sebastopol, where he was also buried.
