Campbell Polson Berry (born November 7, 1834 in Jackson County , Alabama , †  January 8, 1901 in Wheatland , California ) was an American politician . Between 1879 and 1883 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Campbell Berry was a cousin of US Senator and Governor James Henderson Berry (1841-1913) from Arkansas . In 1841 he moved with his parents to Berryville , Arkansas, where he attended elementary school; from 1857 he lived near Yuba City in California. He studied at Pacific Methodist College in Vacaville until 1865 . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1866 and 1869 he was district administrator in Sutter County . His main occupation was agriculture and, for a short time, also in trade. From 1869 and 1878, Berry was a member of the California State Assembly on several occasions . In 1877 and 1878 he served as its president.

In the congressional elections of 1878 Berry was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of California , where he succeeded John K. Luttrell on March 3, 1879 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1883 . In 1882 he renounced another candidacy. Between 1894 and 1898 Berry worked as Subtreasurer of the United States for the US Treasury Department in San Francisco . He died on January 8, 1901 in Wheatland.
