James T. Farley
James Thompson Farley (born August 6, 1829 in Albemarle County , Virginia , † January 22, 1886 in Jackson , California ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of California in the US Senate .
After attending school in his native Virginia, James Farley moved to Missouri at a young age before settling permanently in California in 1850. He studied law in Jackson, Amador County , and began practicing law in 1854. Between 1855 and 1856 he represented his county in the California State Assembly , where he held the post of speaker in the second year of office.
In 1869 Farley became a member of the State Senate , in which he remained until 1876. From 1871 to 1872 he was President pro tempore of the Chamber of Parliament. During this time he rose to be the leading head of the Democratic Party in California. The first attempt to be elected to the US Senate failed in 1874 when he was defeated by Republican Governor Newton Booth . Four years later, he ran for California's second Senate seat and was successful. Farley took up his mandate in Washington, DC on March 4, 1879 and renounced after six years to run again. As a result he worked again as a lawyer in California and died in Jackson in 1886.
