Toni Atkins

Toni G. Atkins (* 1. August 1962 in Wythe County , Virginia ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party .

Life

After finishing school in Virginia, Atkins studied political science at the private Emory & Henry College in Virginia. Then she moved to Harvard University . After graduation, Atkins moved to San Diego , California in 1985 . From December 2000 to December 2008 she was a member of the San Diego City Council. Between July and December 2005, she acted as the successor of Michael Zucchet as mayor of San Diego .

In December 2010, Toni Atkins became a member of the California State Assembly . In 2012 she was elected Majority Leader of the Democratic Group. In May 2014 she took over the office of Chairperson of the Assembly from John Pérez . To run for the California Senate , she passed the presidency to Anthony Rendon in March 2016 . After a successful election, she entered the Senate of her state on December 5, 2016, where she took over the office of pro tempore president on March 21, 2018 as successor to Kevin de León .

Atkins lives openly gay in the South Park neighborhood of San Diego.
