Gerald Robert "Jerry" Sanders (* 14. July 1950 in San Pedro , California ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . He was Mayor of San Diego from December 5, 2005 to December 3, 2012 .

Career

Personal

Jerry Sanders was born in 1950 in San Pedro, a district of Los Angeles . He attended San Diego State University . Sanders is married with two children, Lisa and Jamie.

With the San Diego Police Department

During his senior year at university, Sanders became a cop with the San Diego Police Department . He was with the police for 26 years, from 1973 to 1999, including from 1993 as police chief. During his tenure as police chief, the crime rate fell by more than 40%.

Jerry Sanders was elected Mayor of San Diego on November 8, 2005 with a majority of 54% of the vote to replace the resigned Dick Murphy . His rival candidate was Donna Frye . On September 19, 2007, he abruptly gave up his opposition to recognizing homosexual partnerships. The reason he gave in a speech was that he could not explain to his lesbian daughter why their relationship should be of less value than that of a heterosexual relationship.

In 2008 he was re-elected for a second term against Steve Francis. In 2012 he was not allowed to run again due to a term limit; he was succeeded by the Democrat Bob Filner .
