Robert "Bob" Filner (* 4. September 1942 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party and from December 2012 to August 2013 Mayor of San Diego . From 1993 to 2012 he was a member of the US House of Representatives for the state of California .

biography

After attending school, Filner first studied chemistry at Cornell University , where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA Chemistry) in 1963 . He then completed a postgraduate course in history at the University of Delaware in 1969 with a Master of Arts (MA History). He then worked from 1970 to 1992 on the history faculty of San Diego State University (SDSU). At the same time, however, he continued to study at Cornell University, where he obtained a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D. History of Science) in 1973 .

In addition to his work at SDSU, he was also a member of the staff of the Democratic US Senator for Minnesota Hubert H. Humphrey in 1975 and of Donald M. Fraser , a Democratic Congressman from Minnesota . He was also a member of the San Diego School Board from 1979 to 1983 and its President in 1982. In 1984 Filner served on the staff of California Democratic Congressman Jim Bates .

In 1987 he began his own political career with the election to the city council of San Diego, which he not only belonged until 1992, but he was also vice mayor in 1990.

In 1992 he was elected to the US House of Representatives for the first time as a Democratic candidate and, after eight re-elections since January 3, 1993, he represented the 50th and, since January 3, 2003, the 51st congressional electoral district . Since 2007, Bob Filner has served as Chairman of the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs . After his election as mayor of San Diego , in which he prevailed with 52.5 percent of the vote against the Republican Carl DeMaio , he resigned his seat on December 3, 2012.
