Sylvester C. Smith

Sylvester Clark Smith (born August 26, 1858 in Mount Pleasant , Iowa , †  January 26, 1913 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician . Between 1905 and 1913 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Sylvester Smith attended his homeland public schools as well as Howe's Academy . He then taught in Winfield as a teacher. In 1879 he moved to California, where he worked in agriculture. He also taught here as a teacher in 1883. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1885, he began to practice in Bakersfield in this profession. He also edited the Kern County Echo newspaper. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1894 and 1902 he was a member of the California Senate ; in 1902 he ran unsuccessfully for Congress .

In the 1904 congressional election , Smith was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of California , where he succeeded Milton J. Daniels on March 4, 1905 . After three re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death on January 26, 1913. After that, his mandate fell to Everis A. Hayes, who was victorious in the by-election .
