Mervyn Malcolm Dymally (born May 12, 1926 in Cedros , Trinidad and Tobago , † October 7, 2012 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician . Between 1981 and 1993 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Mervyn Dymally attended the public schools in his homeland until 1944. He then studied at California State University in Los Angeles until 1954 . He later studied at California State University in Sacramento and the United States International University in San Diego . Between 1979 and 1981 he was president of his company Mervyn M. Dymally Co. He also worked as a teacher. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . From 1963 to 1966 he was a member of the California State Assembly ; from 1967 to 1975 he was a member of the State Senate . From 1975 to 1979 he was Lieutenant Governor's Deputy Governor Jerry Brown .

In the 1980 congressional election , Dymally was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 31st  constituency of California , where he succeeded Charles H. Wilson on January 3, 1981 . After five re-elections, he was able to complete six legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . During this time he was from 1987 to 1989 as the successor to Mickey Leland chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus . In 1992, he decided not to run again. After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Dymally temporarily withdrew from politics. In 2002 he was re-elected to the State Assembly of California. He held this mandate until 2008.
