John L. Harmer

John Loren Harmer (born April 28, 1934 in Salt Lake City , Utah - † December 6, 2019 ) was an American politician . In 1974 and 1975 he was Lieutenant Governor of the State of California .

Career

John Harmer served as a Mormon missionary in Great Britain from 1955 to 1957 . He made a 1959 Bachelor Accounts at the University of Utah and then acquired in 1962 at the city's Law School to Bachelor of Laws . He then opened his own law firm together with a partner. He also embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . He became a member of the staff of US Senator Wallace F. Bennett of Utah. Between 1966 and 1974 he was a member of the California Senate . In 1970, Harmer ran unsuccessfully in his party's primary for the office of Attorney General of California. In August 1972 he participated as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach , on which President Richard Nixon was nominated for re-election. That same year he was also one of the electors to officially elect Nixon for his second term.

After the resignation of Vice Governor Edwin Reinecke in 1974, Harmer was appointed as his new deputy by then Governor and later President Ronald Reagan . He held this office until the official end of the term in 1975. He was also chairman of the state senate. In 1974 he ran unsuccessfully for re-election. He later became vice president of the American subsidiary of a Chinese automaker. In 2001 he founded the Lighted Candle Society , which he chaired. This society primarily fought pornography. Afterwards John Harmer lived with his wife in Bountiful (Utah).
