Spencer G. Millard

Spencer Gurdon Millard (born July 10, 1856 in Ionia , Ionia County , Michigan , †  October 24, 1895 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician . In 1895 he was lieutenant governor of the state of California.

Career

In 1877, Spencer Millard graduated from Hillsdale College in his home state of Michigan. He then worked as a teacher in Carson City for three years . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began to work in this profession. In 1887 he moved to Los Angeles, where he also practiced as a lawyer. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . In 1892 he was chairman of the city's Republican nomination convention for the mayor of Los Angeles.

In 1894, Millard was elected Lieutenant Governor of California alongside James Budd . He held this office from the beginning of 1895 until his death on October 24th of the same year. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . However, he had been suffering from the flu since January, which developed into pneumonia from which he did not recover. So he was largely unable to conduct official business during his time as Lieutenant Governor. He was already represented by his future successor William T. Jeter .
