Abel Maldonado (* 21st August 1967 in Santa Maria , California ) is an American politician of the Republican Party and was from 2010 to 2011 Vice Governor of California. He was previously a member of both chambers of the California state legislature and mayor of Santa Maria.

Life

Maldonado was founded in 1967 in Santa Maria, the son of a Mexican born immigrant family and attended after high school , the California Polytechnic State University . He then worked temporarily on his parents' family farm before becoming politically active as a member of the Republican Party. In 1994 he was elected a member of the Santa Maria City Council. Just two years later, in 1996, at the age of 29, he was elected mayor of the city. In 1998 Maldonado ended his work in local politics and was elected to the California State Assembly , where he was one of 80 members of the 33rd district until November 2004. He then applied for a seat in the California Senate , where he represented the 15th District. In November 2006, an attempt to be elected California State Controller (roughly equivalent to a Treasury Secretary) failed because of the party's internal primaries. However, Maldonado was re-elected as State Senator in 2008. In the California Senate, he also sat on the Agriculture Committee of the Chamber of Parliament.

After the Californian Lieutenant Governor John Garamendi was elected to the House of Representatives of the United States in November 2009 and thus resigned, this office became vacant. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger then nominated Maldonado as the new lieutenant governor. Unlike other senior state officials appointed by the governor, Maldonado's nomination had to be ratified not only by the Senate but also by the State Assembly. In February 2010, the State Senate confirmed the appointment, but the State Assembly initially rejected it. Schwarzenegger then again sent the appointment of Maldonado to the legislature, which finally approved on April 22, 2010. Maldonado was sworn in as Lieutenant Governor of California on April 27, 2010. As the holder of the second highest office in the state, he advocated cooperative work with the Democrats , who had a clear majority in both houses of the legislature.

When the election of a new governor and lieutenant governor was due in November 2010, Maldonado ran for a full four-year term as lieutenant governor (who is elected separately from the governor in California). Maldonado was able to prevail in the Republican primary, but was defeated in the actual election to the Democratic Mayor of San Francisco , Gavin Newsom . Newsom got 50 percent of the vote, Maldonado got 39 percent. In January 2011, Maldonado was replaced by Newsom as deputy to the new governor Jerry Brown .

Maldonado ran in November 2012 as the Republican candidate for the seat of the 24th district in the US House of Representatives, but was beaten by the Democratic incumbent Lois Capps with 55 to 44 percent of the vote.

In the spring of 2013, Maldonado announced that he would be running for his party's candidacy in the 2014 California gubernatorial election . On January 16, 2014, Maldonado withdrew his candidacy before the start of the internal party primaries. He justified his withdrawal from the race with currently unfavorable conditions for his application and the desire to spend more time with his family. However, he does not want to permanently withdraw from politics.
