George J. Hatfield

George J. Hatfield (born October 29, 1887 in Waterloo , Ontario , Canada , †  November 15, 1953 in Palo Alto , California ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1935 and 1939 he was lieutenant governor of the state of California.

Career

George Hatfield was born in Canada to American parents. After studying law and becoming a lawyer, he began to work in this profession. He lived at least temporarily in San Francisco and took part in the First World War as a soldier . Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1922 and 1936 he was a member of their state board for California. From 1925 to 1933 he was a federal attorney for the northern district of California.

In 1934 Hatfield was elected Lieutenant Governor of California alongside Frank Merriam . He held this office between 1935 and 1939. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After the end of his tenure as Lieutenant Governor, George Hatfield remained connected to politics. Since 1943 he was a member of the California Senate. In the year of his death he was considered a likely candidate for the office of Senate Chairman ( President Pro Tempore ). Hatfield was also a member of several organizations and associations. He died on November 15, 1953 in Palo Alto.
