John Mansfield

John Mansfield (born August 1822 in Minden , Monroe County , New York , †  May 6, 1896 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American politician . Between 1880 and 1883 he was lieutenant governor of the state of California.

Career

John Mansfield studied law and then practiced as a lawyer in Wisconsin . At the beginning of the Civil War he assembled a company of volunteers from Wisconsin, which he commanded as a captain. In the following years he took part in the war as an officer in the Union Army . He fought in several battles and was also wounded. In the meantime he was captured for a few months. By the end of the war he had attained the rank of Brevet Brigadier General. Mansfield later moved to Los Angeles, where he worked both legally and politically. He was a member of the Republican Party and took part in a constitutional convention of his state in 1878 and 1879. In June 1880 he was a delegate to the Republican National Convention in Chicago , where James A. Garfield was nominated as a presidential candidate.

On September 3, 1879, Mansfield was elected Lieutenant Governor of California on the side of George Clement Perkins . He held this office between 1880 and 1883. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . He was also a member of several organizations and associations and President of the California Historical Society . John Mansfield died in Los Angeles on May 6, 1896.
