Samuel Purdy

Samuel Purdy (* 1819 in New York City , †  February 17, 1882 in San Francisco , California ) was an American politician . Between 1852 and 1856 he was lieutenant governor of the state of California.

Career

Samuel Purdy came from a well-known New York family and was trained as an architect. He had been in California since 1849. There he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1851 he became the first mayor of Stockton .

In the same year Purdy was elected lieutenant governor of the state of California on the side of John Bigler . He held this office between January 8, 1852 and January 9, 1856. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After the end of his tenure as lieutenant governor, he held various other government offices, including the post of tax inspector. He later oversaw the construction of the new San Francisco City Hall. He died there on February 17, 1882.
