Joseph Walkup

Joseph Walkup (born December 25, 1819 in Piqua , Ohio , †  October 15, 1873 in Auburn , California ) was an American politician . Between 1858 and 1860 he was lieutenant governor of the state of California.

Career

In his youth, Joseph Walkup worked as a house and ship carpenter in his home in Ohio and New Orleans . In August 1849 he came to California, where he worked in Auburn in trade. After that he first worked in agriculture. His company Walkup & Wyman ran farms and livestock. In 1854, 1861 and 1865 he visited his old home in the east. On the second visit he married Elizabeth Elliott, with whom he would have two children. From 1868 Walkup was active in the newspaper business. From then until his death, he was the owner and editor of the Placer Herald newspaper . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1852 and 1857 he was a member of the California Senate .

In 1858, Walkup was elected Lieutenant Governor of California at the side of John B. Weller . He held this office between 1858 and 1860. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate. He was also in charge of the state prison. Walkup made for a significant improvement in conditions there. He died on October 15, 1873 of a repeated stroke in Auburn, where he was also buried.
