John F. Chellis

John F. Chellis († September 17, 1883 in Oregon ) was an American politician . In 1862 and 1863 he was lieutenant governor of the state of California .

The sources on John Chellis are very poor. He lived at least temporarily in California and became a member of the Republican Party . In 1862 he was elected lieutenant governor alongside Leland Stanford . He held this office between 1862 and 1863. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After that time, the terms of the governors and lieutenants of California were extended from two to four years. It is worth noting that Chellis, as lieutenant governor, also oversaw the state prison. In this capacity, he was taken hostage during a prisoner escape and was later freed by the police. He died in Oregon on September 17, 1883.
