Lois Capps

Lois Capps (* 10. January 1938 in Ladysmith , Rusk County , Wisconsin as Lois Smith ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . From 1998 to 2017 she represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Lois Smith is the daughter of a clergyman. She studied at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma ( Washington ) until 1959 and then until 1964 at Yale University . In 1990 she completed her studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara , where she has been living since 1960. She worked for twenty years as a nurse or health professional in the Santa Barbara public schools, teaching students about health care. During her time at Yale, she met her husband, Walter Capps , whom she married in 1960. In 1996, her husband was elected to the US House of Representatives in the 22nd  constituency of California. His mandate in Washington, DC , which began on January 3, 1997, ended with his death on October 28, 1997.

Lois Capps was elected to succeed her husband in Congress , whose mandate she took on March 17, 1998. She was re-elected nine times and renounced another candidacy in 2016. After redesigning the constituencies, from 2003 she represented the renamed, but geographically identical, 23rd constituency of her state, which Elton Gallegly had previously represented. Capps was a member of the Energy and Trade Committee and three sub-committees. She has been elected the friendliest member of the House of Representatives by Congress officials on several occasions. She left Congress on January 3, 2017.
