William Royer

William Howard Royer (born April 11, 1920 in Jerome , Jerome County , Idaho , † April 8, 2013 in Redwood City , California ) was an American politician . Between 1979 and 1981 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Royer attended Sequoia High School in Redwood City, California , until 1938 . He then studied until 1941 at Santa Clara University and then until 1943 at Oklahoma A&M College , the later Oklahoma State University in Stillwater . Between 1943 and 1945 he was part of the US Army Air Corps during World War II . After the war he worked as a real estate agent. He also began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1950 and 1966 he served on the Redwood City council. From 1950 to 1960 he was also mayor of this place. Between 1972 and 1979 he was a member of the San Mateo County county council .

After Leo J. Ryan was assassinated , Royer was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when he was due for election to the eleventh seat of California , where he took up his new mandate on April 3, 1979. Since he was defeated by the Democrat Tom Lantos in 1980 , he was only able to complete one term in Congress until January 3, 1981 . In 1981 and 1982, Royer served as the regional representative for the US Department of Transportation in his home country. He spent his old age in Redwood City, where he died in early April 2013.
