Sala Galante Burton born Galante (born April 1, 1925 in Białystok , Poland , † February 1, 1987 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . From 1983 to 1987 she represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Sala Burton came to San Francisco with her family from Poland when she was 14 . Her Jewish parents had left the country in 1939 before the German troops marched in at the beginning of the Second World War . She attended public schools in California and then studied at the University of San Francisco . At the same time she began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1948 and 1950 she was the director of the California Public Affairs Institute and from 1951 to 1954 she served as the vice president of the California Democratic Council . After all, she headed the San Francisco Democratic Women's Forum from 1957 to 1959. In 1956, 1976, 1980 and 1984 she took part as a delegate at the respective Democratic National Conventions .

In the early 1950s she met her future husband and future Congressman Phillip Burton . Through her marriage, she also became the sister-in-law of John Burton , who was also a congressman for California. After the death of her husband in 1983, she was elected in the required by-election for the fifth seat of California as his successor to the US House of Representatives. After two re-elections, she remained in Congress until her death on February 1, 1987 . Her mandate fell to Nancy Pelosi .
