Michael Makoto "Mike" Honda (born June 27, 1941 in Walnut Grove , California ) is an American politician . From 2001 to 2017 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives . After being voted out of office in November 2016, he left Congress on January 3, 2017.

Career

Mike Honda grew up in an internment camp for Japanese Americans during World War II . He then attended San Jose High School until 1959 . By 1974 he completed several courses at San José State University . In between he worked for the Peace Corps from 1965 to 1967 . From 1971 to 1981 he was a member of the Planning Commission of the City of San José . Afterwards he was a member of the school committee of that city between 1981 and 1990. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . From 1990 to 1996 he served on the Santa Clara County County Council . He was then a member of the California State Assembly from 1997 to 2000 . His main job was in the school service.

In the 2000 congressional election , Honda was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 15th  constituency of California , where he took up his new mandate on January 3, 2001. After seven re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until January 3, 2017. Since January 3, 2013 he represented the seventeenth constituency of his state there. During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . Honda was a member of the Grant Committee , the Budget Committee and two sub-committees. In 2015 there were rumors of financial irregularities in the handling of campaign funds. An investigation has been initiated but not yet completed. In November 2016, Honda was not re-elected.

From 2005 to 2013, Mike Honda was vice chairman of the Democratic National Committee . He is a widower and lives privately in San José.
