Harry Richard Sheppard (born January 10, 1885 in Mobile , Alabama , †  April 28, 1969 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1963 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Harry Sheppard attended public schools in his home country and then studied law. He then worked for the transportation department of the Santa Fe Railroad . At that time, Sheppard was also an active member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen . In the meantime he was also active in the copper business in Alaska . Then he was manager of King's Beverage and King's Laboratories Corps until 1934 . At the same time he began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1936 congressional election , Sheppard was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the 19th  electoral district of California, where he succeeded Sam L. Collins on January 3, 1937 . After 13 re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 14 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1963 . Between 1943 and 1953 he represented the 21st and then the 27th district of his state. By 1941, the last of the New Deal laws were passed in Congress. After that, the Second World War also determined the work of Congress. Sheppard then experienced the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement as a member of parliament .

In 1964 he declined to run again. After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Sheppard withdrew from politics. He died on April 28, 1969 in the federal capital Washington.
