Dennis A. Cardoza (born March 31, 1959 in Merced , California ) is an American politician . From 2003 to 2012 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Dennis Cardoza studied at the University of Maryland in College Park until 1982 . Then he worked as a private businessman. He moved to Atwater , where he served on the city council between 1984 and 1987. As a member of the Democratic Party , he was a member of the California State Assembly from 1996 to 2002 .

In the 2002 congressional election , Cardoza was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 18th  electoral district of California , where he succeeded Gary Condit on January 3, 2003 . After four re-elections, he was able to exercise his mandate in Congress until his resignation on August 14, 2012; he had previously announced that he would not run again in November of this year. By Californian standards he is considered a conservative Democrat. Most recently, he was a member of the Agriculture Committee and the Foreign Affairs Committee as well as four sub-committees. A by-election for Cardoza's mandate was not scheduled.
