biography
Torres was born in Central America and emigrated to California with her family when she was five. Before entering politics, she worked as a telephone operator for the Los Angeles Police Department . After a tragic emergency call, she worked with the city council to improve the emergency call. As a result, more bilingual operators were employed. From 2000 she was a member of the city council of Pomona . After the death of Mayor Edward Cortez in September 2005, Norma Torres was elected mayor in early 2006.
In 2008 Torres resigned as mayor after she was elected to the California State Assembly (electoral district 61) with over 60% . She also won the re-elections in 2010 with over 60% of the vote and - after the constituencies had now been reorganized into District 52 - at the end of 2012. Just a few months later, she stood for another election. With the appearance of Gloria Negrete McLeod in the US House of Representatives whose seat was in the California State Senate became vacant. Against the Republican challenger Paul Leon , Mayor of Ontario , Norma Torres prevailed with 59.6%. A few days after this election victory, she resigned as a member of parliament and was sworn in as a senator.
In the State Assembly, Norma Torres served on the Housing and Community Development Committee. Her tenure was marked by the impact of the US real estate crisis on California families. Their efforts raised $ 2 billion in federal funding for the Keep Your Home California program . In addition to other laws designed to help homeowners in dire financial straits, she was also involved in the passage of the Homeowner's Bill of Rights . This law is designed to protect mortgage debtors from foreclosures.
In 2014, Torres ran for the US House of Representatives in the 35th Congressional District. Incumbent Gloria Negrete McLeod announced earlier this year that she would not run again. In the election on November 4, Torres got over 63% of the vote and thus prevailed clearly against their only challenger, Christina Gagnier , who, like Torres, belongs to the Democrats . Torres was sworn in on January 6, 2015, and became a member of the Homeland Security Committee. Re-elected in 2016, she will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States, which meets on January 3, 2017 . Your new legislative period runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.
Norma Torres was sent to the Electoral College in 2008 , which elected Barack Obama to be US President.
