Edward Cortez

Edward S. Cortez (* 1940/41 in Mission , Texas , † September 20, 2005 in Pomona , California ) was an American local politician.

Cortez was born in South Texas to Mexican farm laborers. In 1961 he moved to California with his young family. He settled in Pomona near Los Angeles and ran a gas station. Cortez's experience of gang violence - his eldest son was a member of a gang himself - led to the establishment of the community self-help group Community Action for Peace . He also went into politics, from 1987 he was a member of the planning committee of Pomona.

In 1993, Edward Cortez was elected mayor of Pomona after failing as a city council candidate two years earlier. He defeated city councilor Tomas Ursua and was the first Latino to hold the office of mayor of Pomona. Cortez was repeatedly re-elected, but the last time in November 2004. This he could run until 2008, term of office not quit, just a year after his reelection died Edward Cortez at the age of 64 years to cancer . With over twelve years in office, Cortez was the longest-serving mayor in the over 100-year history of Pomonas. A school was named after him.
