Hugh Steel Hersman (born July 8, 1872 in Port Deposit , Cecil County , Maryland , †  March 7, 1954 in San Francisco , California ) was an American politician . Between 1919 and 1921 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1881 Hugh Hersman came to Berkeley , California with his parents . He attended the public schools in his new home. He then studied until 1893 at Southwestern Presbyterian University in Tennessee and then between 1897 and 1898 at the University of California at Berkeley. He then worked in the banking industry. Between 1914 and 1918 he was President of the First National Bank in Gilroy . He also held managerial positions in various other companies. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1918 congressional election , Hersman was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of California , where he succeeded Everis A. Hayes on March 4, 1919 . Since he was not confirmed in 1920, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1921 . In 1920, the 19th amendment to the Constitution was ratified, which introduced women's suffrage nationwide.

After his tenure in the US House of Representatives, Hugh Hersman became a board member of the American Trust Co. in Gilroy. He died on March 7, 1954 in San Francisco.
