Gilroy is a city in Santa Clara County in the US state of California , United States , with 51,173 inhabitants (as of 2008 ).
The urban area has a size of 41.1 km². It is often referred to as the "garlic capital" of the world as you can see (and smell) as you drive past. The city is the venue for the Gilroy Garlic Festival , which has been taking place annually since 1979 , a cooking and barbecue festival all about garlic. The residents of the Bay Area know the place mainly through its outlet center.
The place caused a stir in 2019 with the assassination of Gilroy .
