Jeffrey Jason Garcia (* 24. February 1970 in Gilroy , California ) is a former American Football poker players. He played the quarterback position with the San Francisco 49ers , Cleveland Browns , Detroit Lions , Tampa Bay Buccaneers , Oakland Raiders, and the Philadelphia Eagles .

Canadian Football League

Garcia began his professional football career in 1994 in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders , where he acted as back-up for Doug Flutie . A year later, Flutie was injured during the game, after which Garcia was starting quarterback with good performance . In 1996 Flutie left the team. In the years to come Garcia established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the league and led the Calgary Stampeders to the final of the Gray Cup , which was won against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats . Garcia has been named Most Valuable Player (MVP).

NFL

In 1999 Garcia signed a contract with the San Francisco 49ers . Due to a concussion Steve Young was able to gain experience as a rookie . After Young's resignation in 2000 , Garcia was awarded the role of starting quarterback. Although the 49ers had a negative record of 6:10 games, Garcia convinced with set team records. This earned him the first nomination for the Pro Bowl . In the following two years Garcia led the 49ers into the play-offs , in 2002 the team lost in the divisional play-off to the eventual Super Bowl winner Tampa Bay Buccaneers . Because of poor performance - compared to the previous three years - in the 2003 season Garcia was released after the season.

After a year marked by injuries for the Cleveland Browns , Garcia joined the Detroit Lions in 2005 . There, too, he was unable to build on previous performances and became a back-up for Joey Harrington .

In 2006 Garcia made a comeback with the Philadelphia Eagles after Donovan McNabb was injured. He played a key role in a five-game winning streak that meant the Eagles jumped into the play-offs. The team fell to the New Orleans Saints in the divisional play-off .

Surprisingly, however, his contract was not extended by the Eagles. Garcia signed in 2007 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he again took the position of starter and was again elected to the Pro Bowl . He reached the NFC wild card play-offs , where he lost to the New York Giants .

Before the start of the 2008 season , there was speculation about a move from Brett Favre to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In addition, Garcia tried unsuccessfully to get a better paid contract beyond the season. A persistent injury and a poor performance in the season opener against the New Orleans Saints meant that he was replaced by Brian Griese . It was only when he was injured that Garcia took the position of starting quarterback again, which he backed up with good performances.

On April 6, Garcia signed a 1-year contract with the Oakland Raiders , where he will play as a substitute and mentor for quarterback JaMarcus Russell . However, Garcia was sacked by the Raiders on September 5th.

After a broken rib from Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb in the first game of the 2009 season , Garcia signed a 1-year contract with the Eagles on September 14. After Michael Vick's suspension ended and he signed with the Eagles, Garcia was released on September 29th. After another year of play in the United Football League with the Omaha Nighthawks and a final year of play with the Houston Texans , Garcia ended his career after the 2011 season.

According to the NFL

After the NFL, he started Jeff Garcia Football , a program to coach professional and college quarterbacks.
