Music groups also perform. The city of Gilroy, around 50 kilometers southeast of San Jose , is a major garlic producer.
Sequence of events
The attack took place on July 28, 2019, the third and last day of the festival. The assassin entered the festival site at around 5:40 p.m. through a hole in a fence in order to bypass the security controls at the entrance to the site. He apparently began to shoot at random at visitors who were present, killing three people, a 6-year-old boy, a 13-year-old girl and a 25-year-old man, and injuring twelve others. The police reached the scene within a minute and fired several shots in the direction of the assassin, who died on the spot. The police initially stated that the assassin was killed by the officers' gunshots; however, a coroner found that he died from a shot in the head from his own gun.
Assassin
The 19-year-old Santino William Legan was identified as the assassin. He killed himself during the assassination attempt. The police have not yet been able to find out a motive.
Jack van Breen, the singer of the band TinMan, who just had a performance on stage, told the broadcaster CBS that he had heard someone ask the assassin: “Why are you doing this?” He said “because I'm very angry " responded.
At first, the police assumed there was a second assassin or an accomplice. However, this initial suspicion was rejected in the course of the investigation, even if it could not be said "with absolute certainty".
