Katherine "Katie" Moore Porter (born January 3, 1974 in Fort Dodge , Iowa , United States ) is an American politician . As a member of the Democratic Party , she has held the 45th seat of the State of California in the United States House of Representatives since January 3, 2019 . She was elected to this office on November 6, 2018 and was sworn in on January 3, 2019.

Life

Katie Porter was born on January 3, 1974 in Fort Dodge , Iowa , and grew up in a small rural community in Iowa. Her father was a farmer and then a banker . Porter was married, but her life was marked by domestic violence on the part of her husband.

After attending the Phillips Academy , she graduated from Yale University with a major in American Studies.

She studied at Harvard Law School under Elizabeth Warren and received the Juris Doctor in 2001 .

Professional career

From 2006 she taught at the University of Iowa College of Law . In March 2012, California Attorney General Kamala Harris appointed Porter to lead an independent bank regulator for a nationwide $ 25 billion mortgage deal.

Political career

Katie Porter won the elections for the 45th seat of the State of California in the United States House of Representatives on November 6, 2018 against the previous owner of the seat, Mimi Walters of the Republican Party , with 52.1 percent of the vote.
