Life

Studies, legal work and first political steps

Eric Swalwell was born in 1980 in Sac City, Iowa, the oldest of four sons. His father was the police chief of Algona , Iowa. After his father lost his job as a police officer, the family moved to California in 1986 and, when Swalwell was just eleven, settled in Dublin , California. Swalwell spent his youth in the East Bay and attended local schools. In 1999 he graduated from Dublin High School there. An athletic scholarship from Campbell University in North Carolina enabled him to be the first member of his family to attend college . After two years and sports injuries that cost him his sports scholarship, he moved to the University of Maryland, College Park . Swalwell, who was considering his future as a result of his sports injury, began to take an interest in politics. He came into contact with the same for the first time while he was still a student, when he was an unpaid intern on the staff of Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher , who represented California's 10th Congressional constituency, in 2001 and 2002 . In 2003 he received a Bachelor of Arts in Government and Politics from his university . He then continued his studies at the Law School of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County , where he received his Juris Doctor in 2006 .

Swalwell has now returned to the East Bay and served as Assistant District Attorney in Alameda County from 2006 to 2012 . He was also a member of the Dublin City Council from 2010 to 2012.

Political career

In the 2012 election , Swalwell was first elected to the US House of Representatives in California's 15th Congressional constituency in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Mike Honda on January 3, 2013 , who after a constituency restructuring (redistricting) in the 17th Congressional constituency changed. In the election he had prevailed with 52.1 to 47.9 percent of the vote against his party colleague and long-time mandate holder Pete Stark . After two re-elections so far in 2014 and 2016 , which he won with 69.8 percent and 73.8 percent respectively, he is still in office today. In the 2018 election , Swalwell won with 71.2 percent of the vote, making it a member of the 116th Congress, which began in 2019.

According to media reports, Swalwell is planning to run for the 2020 presidential election . He announced his candidacy on April 8, 2019 on Stephen Colbert's late night show .
