Janice Kay Hahn (born March 30, 1952 in Los Angeles , California ) is an American politician . Since 2011 she has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives . In 2016, she renounced another congressional candidacy.

Career

Janice Hahn studied at Abilene Christian University in Texas until 1974 . Afterwards she worked as a teacher and private businesswoman. She also began a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . In 1993 she ran unsuccessfully for the City Council of Los Angeles. From 1997 to 1999 she was a member of the city reform commission. In 1998 a first candidacy for the US House of Representatives failed. Between 2001 and 2011 she sat on the City Council of her hometown. In 2010 she sought the office of lieutenant governor of California without success .

After the resignation of Congressman Jane Harman , Hahn was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the by-election for the 36th seat of California with 54.6% of the vote against Republican Craig Huey , where she was elected on July 12, 2011 took up her new mandate. She is a member of the Internal Security Committee . After another re-election in 2012, Hahn has been representing Ken Calvert 's 44th constituency since January 3, 2013 . In 2015, during the civil war in Syria , she rejected a military strike.

Hahn announced in 2015 that he would be running in the November 2016 election for the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors , an independent governing body of five members who are elected for four years. After her successful election to the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, she will take up her new office on December 1, 2016. At the same time, her mandate in the House of Representatives expires; In the Democratic primary election in autumn 2015, a broad field of applicants for the seat, which is considered to be definitely democratic, had already formed. The Democrat Nanette Barragán was elected as Hahn's successor in the House of Representatives .

Janice Hahn is divorced and has three grown children. Her older brother James was Mayor of Los Angeles from 2001 to 2005. She lives privately in San Pedro .
