James Kenneth Hahn (born July 3, 1950 in Los Angeles ) is an American politician who was Mayor of Los Angeles from 2001 to 2005 . His predecessor in office was Richard Riordan . He was replaced on May 17, 2005 by Antonio Villaraigosa , who defeated him in a runoff election with 59 percent of the vote. Hahn belongs to the democratic party.

Hahn grew up in the district of Morningside Park in the district of South Los Angeles on. He attended Manchester Avenue Elementary School , Daniel Freeman Elementary School , Horace Mann Junior High School, and Lutheran High School . He then studied English and law at Pepperdine University in Malibu . After graduation, he worked as a prosecutor .

As Mayor of Los Angeles Hahn was busy with the modernization of the Los Angeles International Airport as well as with the economic problems of the districts Hollywood and San Fernando Valley .

Hahn lives in the district of San Pedro , which is where the port of Los Angeles is located. He was married and has two children. Some of his family members - including his father Kenny Hahn and his sister Janice Hahn - were or are employed in the civil service.
