Joel Turner

Joel Turner (* around 1820, † 1888 ) was an American politician . Between 1868 and 1870 he was Mayor of Los Angeles , California .

Career

Nothing is known about Joel Turner's youth and schooling. There is also no information in the sources about his career outside of politics. What is certain is that he lived in Los Angeles for at least some time and belonged to the Democratic Party .

In 1868 he was elected mayor of Los Angeles. He held this office after a re-election between December 9, 1868 and December 9, 1870. At that time, the city had about 5600 inhabitants. It was an impressive total of 110 saloons . It was also when the city's first high school was founded and the education committee was reformed. Turner's tenure as mayor was overshadowed by criminal activity in 1870. At the time, Turner and eight current and two former city councilors were charged. Turner was then also convicted. What punishment he received is not specified in the source. Politically, it no longer appeared after 1870. He died in 1888.
