Emil Öhmann
Emil Öhmann (born January 25, 1894 in Helsinki ; † October 7, 1984 ibid) was a Finnish German studies, Romance studies and linguist.
life and work
Öhmann received his doctorate in German at the University of Helsinki in 1918 with the thesis Studies on French Words in German in the 12th and 13th Centuries (Helsinki 1918). From 1921 to 1925 he was a lecturer in German studies in Helsinki, then from 1925 to 1943 professor of German studies at the University of Turku (where he also taught Romance studies until 1931) and finally from 1943 to 1963 professor of German studies at the University of Helsinki.
His research interests were particularly focused on the influence of French and Italian on German language history.
In 1961, Öhmann received the Brothers Grimm Prize from the Philipps University of Marburg . In 1954 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . Since 1955 he was a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR and an external member since 1969 .
